GALION - It all just made sense to Amber Wertman.

She saw a job that she knew would keep her interested - her father had made sure of that - in a field in which she already has practical experience.

So when Wertman, a longtime Galion resident and a 2000 Buckeye Central High School graduate, saw the ad seeking applicants to be director of the Galion Historical Society, she jumped at the chance. The society is happy to have her.

"I saw the posting and it combined what I had been doing with an interest of mine," Wertman said. "I know the society has wanted to do this for a long time."

Wertman is the first director of the historical society in its 55-year history. It is one of Galion's oldest nonprofit organizations.

She said her love of history came from her father, Craig Rarick, a 30-year-plus history teacher at Buckeye Central.

"The story I like to tell is that when I was a kid and everyone was going to Disney World and to the beach, we were going to battlefields and president's houses," Wertman said. "Of course, I didn't appreciate it then. But it makes sense now."

Wertman got her degree in business from Franklin University in Columbus, with a minor in marketing.

Wertman previously worked at Ohio's District Five Area Aging Advisory Council and at several nursing homes and home health care companies, doing marketing and public relations.

She hopes to combine her work skills with her zest for history in the new job.

"So far I have really enjoyed meeting all of our nine board members and talking with them individually," Wertman said. "There is a good mix of people that have been around for a while and people that are fairly new.

"I have heard some pretty consistent stories of the past. There are a lot of different backgrounds, so that is good for me."

Wertman hopes to help the society grow.

"One of our top priorities is to grow membership. We want to have a lot more community events," she said. "We have one per quarter now, but we want to have one a month.

"We really want to get involved with the downtown historic district. We have so much stuff, so many artifacts that we could display in store fronts and that sort of thing. We are looking at the bigger picture."

While the Easter-egg hunt, the Christmas open house and the like are good starts, Wertman put the Galion Historical Society on Facebook to reach out to the younger crowd.

"We have a lot of old pictures and we are beginning to get those up there and really trying to grow that project," Wertman said.
