A SCOTTISH graduate was celebrating yesterday after winning almost £1 million in an international poker tournament.

David Vamplew, 23, graduated with a maths degree from Edinburgh University last year and decided to take up poker while he searched for a job.

He had been playing since 2005 after joining Edinburgh University Poker Society.

Now he has scooped a

life-changing £900,000 at the Pokerstars.com European Tour main event in London, beating professional players including former footballer Teddy Sheringham on his way to victory.

David, who is originally from Fife but still lives in his student flat in Edinburgh, said he was stunned to win the event, which saw him defeat 848 other competitors.

He said: "It's going to take a while to sink in. I had to get lucky to win but I'm pretty proud of the way I played. I'm pleased with myself for sure."

Mr Vamplew began playing live tournaments this year and has only won a cash prize once before: £6,000 for a 106th-place finish in the World Series of Poker this summer.

He is now the top-earning Scottish poker player of all time.

As part of his prize, he also wins a seat at the televised EPT Grand Final next spring. He will be competing today in the televised Pokerstars.com UK & Ireland Poker Tour Champion of Champions tournament in London.
