One of the more significant revelations to come out of Mitchell's preseason classic victory against Hudson was the play of the offensive line.

There had been concerns after Mitchell watched every starter from last season graduate.

"They did an excellent job," coach Brian Wachtel said Sunday. "They worked very hard to learn the system. We took a step in the right direction."

One position of concern is right guard where anticipated starter Josh Gable is suffering from a shoulder injury. Wachtel said he is slated to have an MRI evaluated this week to determine the extent of his injury. The optimists hope Gable could return this week. Wachtel said a worst-case scenario would mean Gable's shoulder could require surgery.

In the event Gable is out this week, or longer, Wachtel has an open competition between Jason Prichard and Austin Smith.

"We still have some competition going on believe it or not," Wachtel said. "We're taking it week by week. The guys played together on Thursday night. May the best man win."

Mitchell faces River Ridge in Friday's opener.
