Orlando wins starting job at UMass Dartmouth Posted: 30 Aug 2010 06:58 PM PDT August 30, 2010 Orlando wins starting job at UMass DartmouthPat Orlando very well may have been a successful Division 2 college football quarterback. We'll never know, because the former Manchester Essex standout and 2009 graduate, will play the final three years of his college career in Division 3. After playing just his freshman season at D-2 Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. last fall, Orlando has transferred to D-3 UMass Dartmouth. Yesterday, he was named the starting quarterback for the Corsairs by head coach Mark Robichaud, who heavily recruited Orlando while he was at Manchester Essex. The 6-foot, 180-pounder will have his work cut out for him as the signal caller for a UMass Dartmouth squad that went winless during last year's 0-10 campaign as part of the New England Football Conference. Orlando, who led Manchester Essex to a Division 4 Super Bowl title in 2008 and is the Hornets all-time leader in touchdown passes, did not see any time behind center for 2-8 St. A's last year. The Hawks starting quarterback last year was freshman Michael Pierce of Andover, who threw for 2,629 yards and 21 touchdowns and led the team with 473 yards rushing. Due to the fact that Orlando and Pierce were in the same class, it probably would have been likely that Orlando would've been a backup for his four years had he stayed at St. Anselm. Orlando was unable to be reached by phone last night, but earlier this summer, Orlando's father Vincent told the Times that Pat didn't feel like St. Anselm was the right fit for him. At UMass Dartmouth, Orlando won a two-week competition for the starting QB job this summer, beating out fellow sophomore Brendan McNeish, who started the final five games at quarterback last season. McNeish will begin the 2010 season at wide receiver. "After watching the competition during our first two weeks of camp, we have decided that Patrick Orlando will start at quarterback for us this season," said Robichaud in a press release issued by the school. "Patrick and Brendan both had an outstanding camp, and after speaking with Brendan, I decided that we would be a better team with Brendan at wide receiver and Patrick at quarterback. Brendan is arguably the best athlete on our team, and, for the good of the team, he agreed to a position change that will help us have a better offense." The Corsairs will begin the season at home against Fitchburg State on Saturday. Material from a press release was used in this report.
