Marlington High School grad named to PUCO

A second young Marlington High School graduate has been named to a prominent state position.

Last week, Ohio House Republicans chose 2007 graduate Christina Hagan to be the 50th Ohio House District state representative. The day before, Gov. John Kasich named 1998 Marlington graduate Andre T. Porter, 31, a Gahanna attorney and Alliance native, to be a commissioner of the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. His appointment is subject to Ohio Senate confirmation.

"I'm going to do my best to make everyone at home proud of what we're doing here," Porter said. "We are all focused on economic development and job creation."

Porter is the son of Ray and Louise Porter of Lexington Township.

Porter, a Republican, will succeed Valerie Lemmie when her term ends April 10. Kasich declined to appoint Lemmie to another term or to appoint two former PUCO commissioners who had applied for the seat and been named by a nominating council as finalists. Porter's term would end in April 2016.

Porter will join new PUCO chairman and former Republican state representative Todd Snitchler, of Lake Township, whom Kasich appointed to the commission last month. Hagan was also named to the Ohio House Public Utilities Committee, which oversees legislation related to the PUCO, and Porter said he's looking forward to working with her.

His salary has not been set.

Porter is a utilities regulatory attorney for Schottenstein Zox & Dunn in Columbus. He says he has represented cities, manufacturers, trade associations and other businesses in electricity and telecommunications matters including proceedings before the PUCO. He graduated from Capital University with a bachelor's degree in political science in 2002 and from Ohio State University's law school in 2005.
