A Bandon High School graduate has landed his first professional acting job in Los Angeles.

Three-and-a-half years ago, Dylan DoVale left Bandon to attend the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles, with the help of several local scholarships.

Now 22 years old, DoVale is playing the fairy Moth in the South Coast Reptertory production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream," which opened Jan. 28 at the Orange County, Calif., theater. He graduated in April.

'I'm getting paid to act, which is amazing," DoVale said. 'I can say I'm a professional actor now."

Although he cautioned that it's a small part and 'not that big a deal," he also described the theater as one of the top 10 in the country. He said it's a privilege to be surrounded by such talented people.

Always on stage

The production was praised on the front of the Los Angeles Times' arts section. It runs through Feb. 20. Regular tickets cost $60 at www.scr.org.

He has also appeared in a public service announcement for AIDS Health.

DoVale recently visited his family -- parents Dove and Nilda and brother Vincent -- in Bandon for Christmas, but his rehearsal schedule kept the visit short.

Despite incurring a muscle injury dancing during a preview, DoVale chose to perform on opening night. But he exacerbated his injury and had to sit out for a few days. He planned to return to the stage last week.

Director Mark Rucker, who staged a somewhat similar version of the same play at Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2008, keeps the fairies onstage throughout the entire play.

DoVale has another way of ensuring his small part stands out.

'I made my fairy the gayest one," he said.
