Greensboro Police recruits graduate Posted: 03 Jan 2011 06:41 PM PST To view our videos, you need to GREENSBORO – The new year is a time for new beginnings and for a select few in Greensboro, it means a new career in law enforcement. Twenty-four recruits graduated Monday from the Greensboro Police Department's police basic training course. For the past 6 months, the recruits have endured a lot. "It goes from learning the basics of the general statues, all the way to being physically prepared. Being able to handle a firearm and really just understanding the position of the job itself," recruit Kenneth D. Wilson said. Wilson was one of 24 men and women to graduate. He recently left his job as an elementary school teacher to go into law enforcement. "I had a chance to teach and be able to educate children and I figured that coming into police, into law enforcement you'd be able to educate adults as well," said Wilson. "Not that they always need help but it's always nice to be able to help the community so it was an interesting transition but it was a good one none the less." Chief Ken Miller says it's nice to see people coming into the department looking for a fresh start. "When you have somebody or several people as is the case here, where they're older. The overall class benefits, the department benefits because there is a level of maturity that's with age and wisdom I think. So it's a good thing," Chief Miller said. And with 2011 just getting started, Wilson is looking forward to his new career. "Just the butterflies of doing something new," said Wilson. "Hopefully being able to stand there for someone who is in need. And knowing that I was hopefully able to do something about that. Hopefully able to calm some of those fears. So that's one of the biggest things for me." The next class of Greensboro Police recruits begins in February.
