Rutland High Dropouts Dropping Back Into Class Posted: 09 Dec 2010 04:14 PM PST Story Created: Dec 9, 2010 at 6:07 PM CST Story Updated: Dec 9, 2010 at 7:44 PM CST Since September, Rutland High School has already brought back four drop-outs and has about 200 students enrolled in a program that makes sure they're on track to graduate on time. "We offer some other opportunities for them that fit their needs; they work, they have things going on at home, and through our Storm Watch program, we can allow them to do course work online, work with them, stay in our after school program come in on Saturdays to make up days," says Dr. Julia Daniely, Asst. Principal at Rutland High School. The program offers after school classes Tuesday through Thursday and a six hour school day on Saturday, giving students who have failed courses, or are missing credits, a chance to catch up. Cristan Peterman dropped out in February of her junior year and after seeing that things were tougher outside the classroom, she decided to come back and get her education. "I was working a third shift job from 9 o'clock at night to 7 in the morning and that was really hard...wore me out and I was starting to have to pay my own bills and I was just like 'this is too hard,' I can't do it," says Cristan Peterman, a drop-out who returned to school. Like her, many students are now on track to graduate with their class and feel like they've made a huge accomplishment. Rutland has a 67 percent graduation rate and they hope to reach 75 percent this academic year by offering online classes, face-to-face after school help, Saturday school, and even holiday classes, making students who thought they'd never graduate, start thinking about college. "I really want to go to Macon State i want to be a pediatric nurse." said Peterman.
