SULPHUR, OK-- Over the last year, the Oklahoma School for the Deaf has been able to help over 1600 Oklahomans with disabilities get jobs through the school's Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Services.

"There are many different things that the students can do to become successful later in life. Oklahoma School for the Deaf tries to provide many, many opportunities for the students at various levels of ability," said teacher Candy Tumblson.

OSD's Occupational Training Opporunties for the Deaf program, or OTOD, allows students to work in real world jobs with the help of a job coach. The job coach helps both the students and the employer cope with communication barriers. Student Natalie Bravo believes the training she's received through the program has helped her get and keep many jobs in the community.

"I've worked at a restaurant in the community and also at Walmart. I think I could work anywhere," said Bravo.

The OTOD program is unlike any other resource for students with disabilities in the state because it provides students with both educational and hands on experience. Instructor Gina McLaughlin believes it gives students the tools they need to be successful even in todays job market.

"Arriving at the right time, not being late, doing what your suppose to, being honest, ethical and things like that. That right there is millions dollars worth of valuable experience to help them maintain that job," said McLaughlin.
