Life of Millennials: Parents Welcome Back College Graduate

Most kids can`t wait to get out of mom and dad`s house. Many leave for college and vow to never return. Yet, living at home is very much a reality for many college graduates.

Now, we`ll continue the "Life of the Millennials" series with the story of one recent college grad who is now living in her parent`s basement.

This is the job Amy Chimielewski always dreamed of having. She is an intern at an architectural firm in Bismarck. "This is definitely what I was looking for," said Chimielewski.

But, while she`s got her dream job and her master`s degree, her living arrangements are not what she dreamed of.

Chimielewski is living at home with her parents.

"I was pretty surprised," added Amy`s mom Mary Chimielewski.

Once the shock wore off, Chimielewski`s parents welcomed her back home. They say having their daughter back is actually kind of fun.

"It`s more like a roommate situation. She`s in the basement a lot, in her area," said Mary Chimielewski.

For Chimielewski, the decision was purely financial. "After I moved back it was sort of a transition but I think for the better," she said. "In the long run I`ll be able to pay off a good chunk of school and save up.

Chimielewski pays her parents rent every month and is responsible for her own bills. She`s made a budget, and so far, is sticking to it.

Her parents are happy to help. They say this is a good opportunity to help their daughter learn some important "grown-up" lessons.

"You`re not the child anymore, you`re the adult. You see what we go through. You know what the necessities are and when the bills are due. You know where you have to cut if you need to cut. And if you can`t we will help with finding the lending process of it," said Mary Chimielewski.

A lesson that Chimielewski is fortunate to be able to learn from the comfort of her parent`s home.

Chimielewski plans to live at home with her parents for only a year or so. She hopes that by this time next year she will know if she wants to stay in Bismarck or move to another city.

Either way, she`ll start looking for her own place in the fall. She says by then she`ll have a good portion of her schooling paid for, and will be more financially stable, and ready to be completely on her own.
