HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Richards named head coach at Lanesville

LANESVILLE — Floyd Central graduate Madeline Richards was named head coach at Lanesville starting in the 2010-11 season.

"I'm super excited," Richards said Wednesday. "I got to meet with the girls today. I'm really looking forward to getting in there and getting started. I'm really excited about the opportunity."

Richards replaces Bill Krammes, who was her head coach at Floyd in her first three seasons as a Highlander. Krammes compiled a 38-51 record in five seasons at Lanesville.

"I liked having him as a coach in high school, and he's always been supportive of me," Richards said of Krammes. "He did a good job (at Lanesville), so it's neat to have an opportunity to come in after him, after he got the program going in the right direction."

Richards began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.) for the 2008-09 season before joining Joe Voelker's staff at Floyd Central last year. Richards helped coach Floyd to its first sectional championship in 17 years last season.

"I think Maddie will do a very good job," Voelker said of Richards, who was a senior during his first year as the Highlanders' head coach. "She's a very good basketball coach. She did an excellent job for us this year. I thought she did a nice job of leading our kids, and our kids had a lot of respect for her. They'll be very upset to hear about (Richards leaving FC)."

Richards was a 2003 Floyd Central graudate before playing basketball at Lincoln Memorial in Harrogate, Tenn., where she led the Railsplitters with a 13.3 scoring average as a senior in 2007.
