250 graduate from York College Posted: 22 Dec 2010 06:13 PM PST It wouldn't be a college graduation speech in the 21st century without a social networking reference. "If you had one Facebook status update, what would it be?" York College class speaker Daniel Werbeck said about summarizing the lives of his classmates. Werbeck was one of more than 250 students who received a diploma at Wednesday's fall commencement. "Love what you do, and get good at it," said Werbeck, who had a dual degree in general science and secondary education. That's what classmate Angel L. Newson II, a single mother, has in mind after receiving her dual degree in biology and secondary education. The degree is a long time coming for the Dallastown resident. She had enrolled in the University of Pittsburgh to study medicine about a decade ago, but a pregnancy stalled those plans, she said. She instead focused on her family, which now includes three children ages 8, 10 and 11. When she attended York College, she discovered she had a new passion for teaching. Now she hopes to impress that passion on her future students so that they one day will also be donning a collegiate cap and gown. "I fell in love with it. It's allowing me to share in the experience of so many young people," Newson, 30, said, adding that she plans to get her master's degree and doctorate next. Future in nursing: Caitlin Tharp, 22, said she's excited for the next step in life, which includes a move to North Carolina and a nursing job. She was huddled beside her nursing classmates before commencement, getting a few last-second photos before they got their degrees. "It's an overwhelming sense of accomplishment," said Tharp, a Hanover resident. The ceremony included the awarding of an honorary doctor of humane letters degree to Cyril Dunmire Jr., chairman of the nonprofit, philanthropic Stabler Foundation of Harrisburg and a York College graduate. Robert Lindsay, a professor of education selected as the faculty speaker, said he's faced his share of challenges in life, including being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. "You will be presented with many challenges, but think of them as opportunities," Lindsay said. Reach Andrew Shaw at 505-5431, ashaw@yorkdispatch.com or twitter.com/ydblogwork.
